The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake is firmly engaged
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override slot - typically a small rectangular cover near the base of the shifter on the left or right side
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to gently pry off the override cover cap
- Insert the screwdriver or a key into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to Neutral
- If no power, continue holding override down and manually shift to Neutral without brake pedal
- Keep override depressed until shifter is fully in Neutral position
