⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Engage the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift-lock override - look for a small rectangular cap or slot near the base of the shifter console, typically on the right side or front of the shifter boot
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the override cap
- Press firmly down into the override slot with the screwdriver while simultaneously pressing the shift-lock button on the side of the shifter knob
- Move the shifter from Park to Neutral while maintaining pressure on both the override and the shifter button
- If the shifter will not move, verify the override tool is fully inserted and try rocking the steering wheel slightly to relieve pressure on the park pawl
Shift-lock override location
Near the base of the shifter console, typically on the right side or front edge of the shifter boot area - look for a small rectangular cap approximately 10-15mm in size
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the override slot must be used as the shift-lock is electrically controlled. The ignition does not need to be on for the mechanical override to work. You may need to use a flashlight to locate the override slot in low light. The AMT transmission may make slight clicking sounds when shifting - this is normal.
