The procedure
- Engage the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift-lock override - look for a small rectangular cap or slot near the base of the shifter console, typically on the right side or front of the shifter boot
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the override cap
- Press firmly down into the override slot with the screwdriver while simultaneously pressing the shift-lock button on the side of the shifter knob
- Move the shifter from Park to Neutral while maintaining pressure on both the override and the shifter button
- If the shifter will not move, verify the override tool is fully inserted and try rocking the steering wheel slightly to relieve pressure on the park pawl
