⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and the parking brake is firmly engaged
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery power is available
- Locate the shift lock override cover - a small rectangular cap on the left side of the shifter base near the 'P' position
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the override cover cap
- Press the brake pedal firmly (if electrical power is available)
- Insert the screwdriver into the exposed override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shifter out of Park
- If no electrical power is available, insert the screwdriver into the override slot and apply firm downward pressure while pulling the shifter toward you and moving it to Neutral
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded onto a flatbed

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the override mechanism is purely mechanical. You will need to apply firm pressure to the override button while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward you and moving it to Neutral. The action may require significant force. The steering wheel will remain locked, so the vehicle must be pushed or winched straight.
