⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and the parking brake is firmly engaged
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery power is available
- Locate the shift lock override cover - a small rectangular or circular cap on the shifter console, typically on the left side of the shifter base
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the override cover cap
- Press the brake pedal firmly (if electrical power is available)
- Insert the screwdriver into the exposed override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shifter out of Park
- If no electrical power is available, insert the screwdriver into the override slot and apply firm downward pressure while moving the shifter to Neutral
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded onto a flatbed
Shift-lock override location
Small cover cap on the shifter console, generally on the left side of the shifter base near the Park position
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the mechanical override must be used. Apply firm and steady pressure to the override release while moving the shifter. The steering wheel will remain locked without power, so the vehicle must be pushed or pulled in a straight line or loaded onto a flatbed.
