🚨 2021 SEAT Leon: Emergency Neutral
The 2021 SEAT Leon (4th generation, KL platform) uses a console-mounted shift-by-wire automatic transmission selector with electronic shift lock and modern electronic parking brake integration.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground; if possible, ensure electronic parking brake is engaged via the switch.
- Attempt to turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if any battery charge remains.
- Locate the shift lock override access: look for a small rectangular or circular cover on the LEFT side of the shifter base, integrated into the console trim.
- Use the metal key blade or a small flathead screwdriver to carefully pry off the override cover.
- Insert the key blade or screwdriver straight down into the override slot (depth approximately 15-20mm).
- While holding the override tool down, press the brake pedal if power is available and move the shifter forward to Neutral position.
- If completely without power, keep the override depressed and apply firm forward pressure on the shifter to move it to Neutral.
- The mechanical override releases the shift lock pawl, allowing manual shifter movement.
- Once in Neutral, remove the tool and replace the plastic cover.
- NOTE: The electronic parking brake may not release without power; you may need to jump-start or the vehicle may need flatbed transport if EPB is engaged.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the mechanical override should still function to move the shifter to Neutral. HOWEVER, the electronic parking brake (EPB) will NOT release without 12V power, which means the rear wheels will remain locked. To move the vehicle, you will need to either: (1) jump-start the 12V battery to release the EPB, or (2) use a flatbed tow truck. The shift-by-wire system may not provide tactile feedback, but the mechanical override directly actuates the transmission park lock. Power steering and ABS will not function during unpowered movement.
