⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
- Turn the ignition to ON position (press START button without brake pedal, or turn key to ON).
- Locate the shift lock override slot on the left side of the shifter base, covered by a small rectangular cap.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the override cap.
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shifter to N (Neutral).
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded.
- If ignition power is available but shifter won't release, check that the brake pedal is being pressed fully (brake light switch may have failed).

Left side of the shifter base, under a small rectangular plastic cap approximately 15mm wide.
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery (no ignition power), the electronic shifter will not release from Park mechanically. The 12V battery must be jump-started or replaced to provide power to the shifter module. Once ignition is ON, use the shift lock override procedure. If jump-starting is impossible, the vehicle must be lifted/dollied with rear wheels off the ground (FWD model) or flatbedded.
