🚨 2016 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid: Emergency Neutral
The 2016 Crosstrek Hybrid (first-generation plug-in hybrid, Japan/select markets only) uses a console-mounted shift lever with electronic shift lock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ON/ACC position if battery has any charge (turn key to ON or press START button without brake pedal)
- Locate the shift lock override slot: look for a small covered slot near the shifter base—typically on the left side or front-left of the shifter console
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to remove any cover or cap over the override slot
- Insert the tool into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shift lever to Neutral
- If the vehicle has absolutely no electrical power, the override slot mechanical release is your only option—maintain pressure on override while shifting
- For flatbed towing, shift to Neutral, but be aware the hybrid system may engage if any electrical power is present
Shift-lock override location
Near shifter base on console—look for small covered slot, typically left side of shifter area
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, use the mechanical shift lock override slot. No electrical power means no hybrid system engagement risk, but also no power steering or brakes—flatbed towing strongly recommended.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
PLUG-IN HYBRID WARNING: This is a plug-in hybrid with both high-voltage battery and CVT transmission. Even in Neutral, the electric motor may engage unexpectedly if power is present. FLATBED TOWING ONLY—do not tow with any wheels on the ground. The hybrid drivetrain can be severely damaged by improper towing.
