🚨 2014 Subaru Forester XT: Emergency Neutral
The 2014 Forester XT (first year of fifth generation SJ) uses a console-mounted CVT shifter lever with electronic shift lock requiring brake application and ignition power.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Turn the ignition to ON position if battery has any charge remaining (do not start engine)
- Firmly apply and hold the brake pedal
- Locate the shift lock override: look for a small cover or slot on the left side of the shifter assembly near the base
- Remove the small cover cap if present using a flat-blade screwdriver
- Insert a screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and push down firmly
- While holding the override depressed and keeping brake applied, press the shifter button and move to Neutral
- If steering wheel is locked, turn the key to ACC position while gently rotating the wheel to unlock
Shift-lock override location
Small slot or cover on the left side of the shifter base assembly (exact position may vary slightly from SH generation; consult owner's manual for precise location)
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery: The mechanical shift lock override still functions. Insert tool into the override slot and depress while moving shifter to Neutral - the electronic brake interlock is bypassed mechanically. Steering wheel will remain locked without power to ACC position; vehicle may need to be dollied or towed with front wheels lifted. Jump-start required to restore power and start engine.
