The procedure
- Turn the ignition to ON position if battery has any charge remaining (do not start engine)
- Firmly apply and hold the brake pedal
- Locate the shift lock override: look for a small cover or slot on the left side of the shifter assembly near the base
- Remove the small cover cap if present using a flat-blade screwdriver
- Insert a screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and push down firmly
- While holding the override depressed and keeping brake applied, press the shifter button and move to Neutral
- If steering wheel is locked, turn the key to ACC position while gently rotating the wheel to unlock
