🚨 2020 Suzuki Lapin: Emergency Neutral

The 2020 Suzuki Lapin (Japanese market kei car) uses a floor-mounted console automatic shifter with electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position (if battery has any charge).
  3. Locate the shift lock override—look for a small covered slot or button near the shifter base, typically on the right side or front edge of the shifter console.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to remove the small cover cap.
  5. Insert the tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding the override depressed, move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
  7. If the vehicle has a keyless ignition, you may need to place the key fob in a designated slot (if equipped) to enable accessory power.
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot near the shifter base, generally on the right side or forward portion of the shifter console—consult owner's manual for precise location
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the mechanical shift lock override should still release the shifter. Insert a tool into the override slot and apply firm pressure while moving the shifter to Neutral. The override mechanism is mechanical and does not require electrical power to function.
