The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked.
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if you have any battery power remaining (this may release the shift lock automatically when the brake is pressed).
- If the shift lock does not release, locate the shift-lock override slot—typically a small rectangular opening with a plastic cover near the base of the shifter console, usually on the right side or front-right of the shifter lever.
- Remove the plastic cover from the override slot by gently prying it up with a flathead screwdriver or similar tool.
- Insert a flathead screwdriver or similar flat object into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter button/trigger and moving the lever to Neutral.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded onto a flatbed.
