🚨 2017 Tesla Model 3: Emergency Neutral
The 2017 Model 3 uses a column-mounted stalk on the right side of the steering column for gear selection (Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive).

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- If you have ANY 12V power: Press the brake pedal firmly, then push the drive stalk up once (halfway) and hold for 1-2 seconds to engage Neutral
- If the 12V battery is completely dead, you CANNOT shift into neutral electronically - there is no mechanical override on the Model 3
- With a dead 12V battery, you must jump-start the 12V system first: open the front trunk (frunk) by using the manual release cables located under the front tow eye cover
- Remove the front tow eye cover (pull toward you on the driver side of the front fascia), access the two pull loops, pull BOTH loops simultaneously to release the frunk latch
- Once the frunk is open, locate the 12V battery jump posts (red positive, black negative) under the maintenance panel on the driver side
- Connect an external 12V power source to the jump posts (positive to positive, negative to negative or ground)
- With 12V power restored, get in the vehicle and shift to Neutral using the drive stalk (press brake, push stalk up and hold)
- To activate Transport Mode for flatbed loading: Touchscreen > Controls > Service > Towing - enable Transport Mode (requires 12V power)
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, there is NO mechanical shift override. You must first gain access to the frunk using the manual release cables behind the front tow eye cover (pull both loops simultaneously). Then jump the 12V system using the posts under the frunk maintenance panel. Once 12V power is present, use the drive stalk to shift to Neutral.

CRITICAL: Model 3 must be transported on a flatbed with all four wheels OFF the ground. The permanent magnet motors generate voltage when wheels rotate, which will damage the drive system. Never tow with any wheels on the ground. Enable Transport Mode via touchscreen before loading to prevent the parking brake from automatically engaging during transport. If Transport Mode cannot be enabled due to a vehicle fault, the parking brake must be manually overridden - contact Tesla Service.
