🚨 2024 Toyota Avanza: Emergency Neutral
The 2024 Avanza (second-generation DNGA platform) uses a conventional floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift lock tied to the brake pedal.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake is firmly engaged.
- Turn the ignition to the ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining.
- Locate the shift lock override slot—look for a small rectangular cap or cover near the base of the shifter console, typically on the left side or front edge of the shifter surround.
- Use a flat-head screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the override cap.
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal (if possible) and moving the shifter from Park to Neutral.
- If the override does not release, verify you are pressing deep enough into the slot—you should feel a mechanical click or release of resistance.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be pushed or loaded onto a flatbed.

With zero electrical power
With zero power, the shift lock override is purely mechanical. You will not need ignition power to use the override slot. Ensure parking brake is set, remove the override cap, press into the slot firmly, and shift to Neutral. The steering will remain locked, so the vehicle must be towed with front wheels off the ground or on a flatbed.
