🚨 2019 Toyota Century: Emergency Neutral

The 2019 Century (third generation, G60) uses an electronically controlled console-mounted shift lever with P-R-N-D positions and hybrid system integration, identical to 2018.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly.
  2. Attempt to turn the ignition to ON or READY mode if any battery power remains.
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal.
  4. Locate the shift lock override cover: look for a small removable cap on the left side or front of the shifter base, near the console.
  5. Remove the cover with a small flathead screwdriver or trim tool.
  6. Insert the screwdriver or key blade into the override slot and press down while moving the shifter from Park to Neutral.
  7. The shifter should release; move it to Neutral and hold until it engages.
Shift-lock override location
Small cap on the left or forward side of the shifter base—exact position may require inspection of the console trim around the shifter.
With zero electrical power
The Century's electronically controlled shifter requires 12V power to function. With a completely dead battery, the shift lock override may not mechanically release the shifter on this luxury hybrid platform. Jump-starting the 12V battery is strongly recommended. If impossible, flatbed with wheel dollies is required—do not attempt to tow with any wheels on the ground.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
This is a hybrid vehicle with a V8 engine and electric motor. The hybrid system must be fully OFF (not in READY mode) before any towing or shifting. Even in Neutral, the hybrid system can cause motor engagement if active. Flatbed-only towing is mandatory—never tow with drive wheels on pavement. Consult the owner's manual for the specific tow-mode procedure if the vehicle is operable.
