The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and parking brake is firmly engaged
- If manual transmission: the shifter moves freely without power - simply move to neutral position
- If automatic transmission (column shifter): locate the shift lock override slot on the lower right side of the shifter housing near the steering column
- Remove the small plastic cap covering the override slot using a flathead screwdriver or similar tool
- Insert a screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, move the shifter to Neutral
- Remove the tool and replace the cap
