🚨 2017 Toyota Roomy: Emergency Neutral

The 2017 Toyota Roomy uses a conventional console-mounted P-R-N-D gate-type shifter with electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly.
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining.
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small rectangular cover on the left side of the shifter base near the P position.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the override cover cap.
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key straight down into the override slot while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal (if power available) or without brake (if no power).
  6. While holding the override down, move the shifter from P to N.
  7. The vehicle can now roll freely; control it appropriately.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the shift lock override can still be manually actuated. Turn the key to ACC position mechanically if possible (does not require battery power to turn the key). Press the override and shift to N without needing brake pedal input. The steering wheel will remain locked unless the key is in ACC.
