The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground.
- If the 12V battery has any charge, turn the ignition to ON (press START without brake pedal twice).
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Move the shift lever to N (neutral) by pressing the lever-mounted release button if present, or by moving the lever to the neutral gate position.
- If the shifter will not move electrically, locate the shift lock override slot — typically a small covered opening near the base of the shifter console.
- Remove the small plastic cover using a flathead screwdriver or trim tool.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down while simultaneously moving the shifter to N.
- Once in neutral, the vehicle can be moved manually or loaded.

With a completely dead 12V battery, the electronic shifter will not operate and the shift lock override must be used. You may need to manually release the electronic parking brake by accessing the brake caliper directly or using the emergency brake release cable if the EPB is engaged and cannot be released electronically. Jump-starting the 12V battery even briefly is the preferred method.

The Yaris Cross is a hybrid with an electronic parking brake. Even in neutral, the hybrid system may engage if the vehicle is moved improperly. For towing, the drive wheels (front wheels) MUST be off the ground — use a flatbed or tow dolly with front wheels raised. Do NOT flat-tow this vehicle. If the 12V battery is dead and the hybrid system cannot initialize, the transmission may not lubricate properly during a wheels-down tow, causing severe damage.
