🚨 2026 Toyota Yaris Cross: Emergency Neutral
The 2026 Yaris Cross hybrid uses a small electronic shifter lever on the center console with detent positions for P-R-N-D-B.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
- If 12V power is available, turn the ignition to ON (press START without brake pedal twice).
- Press and hold the brake pedal fully.
- Move the shift lever to N (neutral) position.
- If the shift lever will not move from P, locate the shift lock override slot—typically a small covered opening near the base of the shifter on the right side or front.
- Remove the cap/cover from the override slot using a flathead screwdriver or trim tool.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or the emergency key into the slot and press down while holding the brake and moving the shifter to N.
- Once in N, the vehicle can be pushed or winched with the parking brake released.
- For transport, verify READY light is OFF; if hybrid system is active, place in P and power down completely before flatbed loading.
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot near the shifter base, typically on the right or front side of the shifter console—exact location may vary; consult owner's manual if not immediately visible.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shifter will not release from P even with the override—you cannot reliably shift to neutral. The steering lock and hybrid transmission lock both require some 12V power. Jump-start the 12V battery (under hood) to gain minimal power, then use the shift-lock override. Without any power, the vehicle cannot be safely shifted and must be dollied or flatbedded with wheels off the ground.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID VEHICLE: Never tow with drive wheels on the ground when the hybrid system has any power or the transmission is not confirmed in N. The electric motor can generate voltage and damage the inverter. Always use a flatbed or wheel-lift with front wheels UP. If you must roll the vehicle a short distance with no power, confirm it is fully powered down (READY light off) and only push—never tow.
