🚨 2023 Toyota Yaris: Emergency Neutral

The 2023 Toyota Yaris hybrid uses a compact console-mounted electronic shift lever with a button-release mechanism similar to other Toyota hybrids.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if 12V power is available (press START button without brake pedal)
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
  4. Press the shifter release button on the front of the shift lever and move to N (Neutral)
  5. If the hybrid system will not power on due to dead 12V battery, proceed to manual override procedure
  6. Locate the shift lock override slot—it is typically under a small rectangular cap on the console near the shifter base
  7. Remove the cap carefully using a flathead screwdriver or trim tool
  8. Insert a flathead screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly
  9. While holding the override down, move the shifter to N without pressing the brake pedal
  10. Replace the cap after shifting
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular cap near the shifter base on the center console; exact position varies but typically to the right or front-right of the shifter
With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the hybrid system cannot initialize. Use the shift lock override slot (remove cap near shifter, insert tool, press down while moving shifter to N). The electronic parking brake may remain engaged—consult flatbed operator about wheel-lift towing method.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID VEHICLE: Do NOT flat-tow this vehicle with any wheels on the ground. The electric drive motors are mechanically connected to the wheels and will generate voltage/cause damage if rotated. Flatbed or wheel-lift (front wheels up for FWD) ONLY. If the 12V battery is dead, the electronic parking brake may not release—professional flatbed with wheel dollies may be required.
