The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
- For manual transmission: Press the clutch pedal fully to the floor (no power needed)
- Move the shift lever to neutral position (center position, no resistance)
- If an automatic transmission is present (rare): look for a small shift lock override cover near the shifter base
- Pry off the override cover with a flathead screwdriver or similar tool
- Insert a screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down while moving the shifter to neutral
