⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular cover near the base of the shifter assembly on the console
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the override cover
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the lever to Neutral
- If successful, the shifter will release and you can select Neutral
- Keep your foot on the brake pedal throughout this process if power is available

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, you must use the shift lock override as ignition power is required for normal shifter operation. The mechanical override will work without any electrical power. If the override slot is difficult to access, you may need to remove trim pieces around the shifter base for better access.
