🚨 2009 Volkswagen Derby: Emergency Neutral

The 2009 Derby (sold in Latin American markets) uses a traditional console-mounted automatic transmission shifter with mechanical cable linkage and shift lock solenoid.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
  2. Turn the key to ON/ACC position (do not need to start engine).
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular opening covered by a cap, located on the upper left side of the shifter base housing, just forward of the shifter button.
  4. Use the metal key blade or a small flathead screwdriver to pry off the plastic cap.
  5. Insert the key blade or screwdriver into the slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
  7. Remove the tool and replace the cap once the vehicle is in Neutral.

With zero electrical power
The Derby's shift lock is mechanical-solenoid based. With completely dead battery, the override slot mechanically bypasses the solenoid and should work without any electrical power. Simply use the override procedure as described. If the shifter still will not move, the linkage may be seized; verify the shifter button itself is being pressed while using the override.
