🚨 2004 Volkswagen GTI VR6: Emergency Neutral
The Mk4 GTI VR6 uses a traditional console-mounted manual transmission shifter with no electronic shift lock (manual transmissions have mechanical linkage only).

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Press the clutch pedal fully to the floor
- Pull the shifter out of gear (typically from 1st or Reverse) and move to Neutral position
- Release the clutch pedal once in Neutral
- The vehicle can now be pushed or rolled
With zero electrical power
Manual transmission requires no electrical power to shift. With dead battery, simply press the clutch and move the shifter to Neutral. The shifter is purely mechanical. If the clutch is difficult to press with no power assist, you can still force the shifter out of gear with some effort, though this puts stress on the synchronizers - pressing the clutch is always preferred.
