🚨 2025 Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer: Emergency Neutral

The 2025 ID.7 Tourer uses Volkswagen's electronic drive selector stalk on the right side of the steering column, similar to other MEB-platform EVs.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and chocked if possible
  2. With 12V power available, press the brake pedal and turn on the vehicle by pressing the start button without foot on brake (accessory mode) or with foot on brake (ready mode)
  3. Move the drive selector stalk to N (neutral) position by pushing it up once from P
  4. If the vehicle has 12V power but won't shift (brake switch failure), locate the shift lock override under the small rectangular cap on the center console to the left of the drive selector area
  5. Pry off the override cap with a flat tool, insert a key or small screwdriver into the slot, press down firmly while attempting to move the selector to N
  6. For towing or flatbed loading with power available, engage transport mode: turn on vehicle, select N, then hold N position for 3-4 seconds until 'Transport Mode Active' appears on the instrument cluster

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the electronic shifter and parking brake cannot be released electrically. You must jump-start the 12V system (battery is under hood) or connect an external 12V power source to gain enough power to release the parking brake and shift to neutral. The MEB platform requires 12V power for all transmission and parking brake functions.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
This vehicle has an electronic parking brake that requires 12V power to release. With a dead battery, the parking brake will remain engaged even if you shift to neutral. Transport mode must be activated for towing—failure to do so will damage the drive unit. FLATBED TRANSPORT ONLY is recommended. If Transport Mode cannot be engaged due to complete power loss, the vehicle must be winched onto a flatbed with the parking brake locked.
