🚨 2024 Volkswagen ID.3 PL: Emergency Neutral
The 2024 ID.3 uses a small column-mounted rotary drive selector on the right side of the steering column with positions for P, R, N, and D.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if functional
- If 12V power is available: turn on the ignition by pressing the start button without pressing the brake pedal
- Rotate the drive selector counterclockwise from P through R to reach N (Neutral)
- If the shift lock engages and you cannot rotate from P: locate the small circular shift lock override cap on the upper surface of the drive selector housing
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to gently pry off the override cap
- Press down firmly on the override button inside while rotating the selector to N
- The vehicle can now be moved or winched onto a flatbed

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electric parking brake cannot be released electronically and the drive selector will not unlock from P. The shift lock override will allow mechanical release to N, but the EPB may require a jump start or external 12V power to the jump point under the hood to release. If EPB cannot be released, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with the rear wheels lifted or using skates.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The ID.3 is a battery-electric vehicle with no traditional transmission. NEVER tow with wheels on the ground - the electric motor will generate voltage and can damage the high-voltage system. FLATBED TRANSPORT ONLY. The 12V battery is located under the front hood and can be jump-started if needed to release the electronic parking brake before loading.
