🚨 2026 Volkswagen ID.3 PL: Emergency Neutral
The 2026 ID.3 uses a small stalk-style monostable shifter on the right side of the steering column that returns to center after each selection.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and the parking brake is applied (if functional).
- If 12V power is available, turn on the ignition by pressing the start button without the brake pedal - you need electrical power for the shift-by-wire system.
- Press and hold the brake pedal, then push the shifter stalk forward momentarily to select 'N' (Neutral) - the gear position will display on the instrument cluster.
- If the shifter stalk will not move or 'N' will not engage, check for a small shift-lock override access - typically a small cap or slot near the base of the shifter stalk assembly on the steering column, though exact location on the ID.3 PL variant may differ from other ID models.
- Insert a small screwdriver or the emergency key blade into the override slot and press down while moving the shifter stalk to 'N'.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be pushed or pulled - verify 'N' is displayed on the instrument cluster.
- For flatbed loading, ensure the vehicle is in Neutral and parking brake is released.
Shift-lock override location
Likely near the base of the shifter stalk on the steering column, accessed by a small cap, but exact location on the ID.3 PL variant not independently verified
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shift-by-wire system will NOT function. You cannot shift into Neutral electronically. The vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground, or the 12V battery must be jump-started to restore power to the shifter system before moving the vehicle under its own wheels.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The ID.3 is a battery-electric vehicle with a permanently engaged single-speed transmission. NEVER tow with any wheels on the ground unless in Neutral with 12V power active. Without power or Neutral engaged, the motor remains mechanically locked and towing will cause severe drivetrain damage. Always use a flatbed or trailer with all wheels OFF the ground if electrical power cannot be restored.
