⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and the parking brake is firmly engaged.
- Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start the engine, but the 12V electrical system must be active).
- Firmly depress and hold the brake pedal.
- Locate the small rectangular shift lock override cover on the left side of the shifter base (driver's side of the shifter mechanism).
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or trim tool to carefully pry off the override cover.
- While holding the brake pedal, insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
- If the 12V battery is completely dead, you must jump-start the 12V battery or connect a portable power source to gain enough electrical power to release the shift lock - the override slot requires some electrical function to work properly.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded onto a flatbed.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shift lock cannot be fully overridden even with the manual release. Jump-start the 12V battery or connect a portable jumper pack to provide minimal power, then use the shift lock override procedure. The hybrid system does not need to be ready, only 12V accessory power.
