🚨 2008 Volkswagen Pointer: Emergency Neutral

The 2008 Volkswagen Pointer pickup (Latin America market, based on previous-generation platforms) uses a simple floor-mounted console shifter with a standard PRNDL gate and button-release on the shifter handle.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground with the parking brake firmly engaged and wheels chocked.
  2. Look for the shift lock override access point near the base of the shifter on the console—this may be a small rectangular slot or opening, sometimes covered by a removable cap.
  3. If a cap is present, remove it by prying gently with a flathead screwdriver.
  4. Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar narrow tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
  5. While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral.
  6. If no override slot is easily visible or the battery is completely dead, a momentary jump-start to the 12V battery will allow the shift lock to release for one shift operation.
Shift-lock override location
Expected to be a small slot near the base of the shifter on the console, but exact location not confirmed for this regional-market model; inspect carefully around the shifter base and under any trim caps.
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift lock is mechanically engaged. Use the shift lock override slot as described. If the override mechanism cannot be located or is not functional, a momentary jump-start to the 12V battery will allow one shift operation before power is lost again.
