⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ON position (if battery has enough charge) or ACC position
- Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular cap on the left side of the shifter base, near the P position
- Use a flat-head screwdriver or similar tool to pry off the small plastic cap covering the override slot
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the exposed override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, move the shifter from P to N without pressing the brake pedal
- If successful, the shifter will move freely to Neutral
- Replace the override cap after shifting to Neutral

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift lock override will still function mechanically. You do not need battery power to use the manual override - simply pry off the cap and press the override mechanism while shifting to N. The ignition position does not matter if there is no power available.
