⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake is firmly applied.
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if possible to provide power to the shift lock system.
- Firmly press and hold the brake pedal.
- Press the shift lock release button on the shifter (if power is available) and move the shifter to Neutral.
- If no power is available, locate the shift lock override slot—typically found as a small rectangular opening near the base of the shifter, often covered by a small cap or trim piece.
- Remove the cap using a flathead screwdriver or similar tool.
- Insert a small screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shifter to Neutral.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded onto a flatbed.
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular slot near the base of the shifter console, typically covered by a removable cap on the right or front side of the shifter assembly.
With zero electrical power
With no 12V power, the shift lock override must be manually activated using the override slot. Insert a tool into the slot and apply firm downward pressure while moving the shifter. The ignition does not need to be in any particular position when using the mechanical override.
