The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and set the parking brake.
- Turn the ignition to ON/accessory mode (turn key to ON position).
- Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small covered slot near the shifter button on the right side of the shifter handle, or under a small cap at the base of the shifter on the console.
- Remove the cover or cap using a flathead screwdriver or key.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the shifter rearward from P through R to N (neutral).
- Release the override tool once the shifter is in N position.
- If the brake pedal is non-functional, the override alone should allow shifter movement with the ignition ON.

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power and the key in the OFF position, the mechanical shift lock may still be engaged on some variants. Try inserting the key and turning to ON (even with a dead battery, the mechanical key cylinder may release the shift lock on older designs). If this does not work, look for the mechanical override slot and use a screwdriver. As a last resort, the vehicle must be winched onto a flatbed if the shifter cannot be moved to N mechanically.
