🚨 2004-2011 Volvo S40: Emergency Neutral

The second-generation S40 (2004.5-2011) uses a console-mounted automatic shifter with a P-R-N-D-S gate and a modern, shorter lever design.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and chocked
  2. Turn the ignition key to position II (ON) if possible
  3. Press the brake pedal firmly
  4. If the shifter releases, move it to N (neutral)
  5. If the shifter will not release from Park, locate the shift-lock override—it is a small rectangular slot with a removable cover on the right side of the shifter base
  6. The cover may be labeled 'shift lock release' or have a small icon; pry it out gently with a flat-blade screwdriver or fingernail
  7. Insert the ignition key, a flat-blade screwdriver, or a similar tool into the slot and press down firmly
  8. While holding the tool down, move the shifter to N (neutral)
  9. If you have NO key or cannot turn the ignition, use the shift-lock override as described above; the override is mechanical and does not require power
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular slot with a removable cover on the right side of the shifter base, often labeled 'shift lock release'
With zero electrical power
The shift-lock override is mechanical. Remove the cover on the right side of the shifter base, insert a tool (the ignition key works well), press down, and shift to N. No electrical power is required to use the override.
