⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly.
- Attempt to power the vehicle to accessory mode by pressing the START button twice without pressing the brake pedal—this requires a functional 12V battery.
- With power available, press and hold the brake pedal.
- Locate the shift-lock override—a small rectangular slot or button on the console near the shifter base, typically on the right side or behind the shifter, which may be covered by a trim piece that pries up.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or key to press down on the override mechanism while moving the shifter to Neutral.
- If the 12V battery is completely dead and cannot provide accessory power, you must jump-start the 12V battery first before attempting to shift.

With zero electrical power
The XC40 Recharge plug-in hybrid requires 12V power for shifter operation. With a completely dead 12V battery, the shift-lock override may not function reliably. Jump-start the 12V battery to restore accessory power before attempting to shift. The 12V battery is located in the engine compartment (standard 12V lead-acid or AGM battery).
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The XC40 Recharge plug-in hybrid must be loaded on a flatbed truck with all wheels off the ground. DO NOT tow with any wheels on the ground—even short distances—as this can severely damage the electric drive motors and hybrid transmission components. Before loading, ensure the vehicle is in Neutral and release the parking brake only after the vehicle is secured to the flatbed.
