Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake firmly
  2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
  3. Allow engine and exhaust system to cool completely (minimum 2 hours)
  4. Gather all tools, parts, and fluids before beginning
  5. Raise front of vehicle with floor jack and support with jack stands at frame rails
  6. Raise rear of vehicle and support with jack stands at rear axle housing

    Drain engine oil
    Position drain pan under oil pan drain plug. Remove drain plug using appropriate socket (typically 9/16" or 5/8"). Allow oil to drain completely for at least 10 minutes. Inspect drain plug washer and replace if damaged. Reinstall drain plug and tighten securely.

    Replace oil filter
    Position drain pan under oil filter (located on driver side of engine block). Use oil filter wrench to remove old filter by turning counterclockwise. Clean filter mounting surface on block. Apply thin coat of clean oil to rubber gasket on new filter. Thread new filter on by hand until gasket contacts mounting surface, then tighten an additional 3/4 turn.

    Refill engine oil and check level
    Remove oil filler cap on driver side valve cover. Using funnel, add 4.5 quarts of oil initially. Install filler cap. Start engine and run for 1 minute, checking for leaks at filter and drain plug. Shut off engine and wait 5 minutes. Check dipstick and add oil to bring level to full mark (approximately 5 quarts total).

    Replace air filter
    Remove wing nut or clips securing air cleaner lid on top of carburetor. Lift lid and remove old air filter element. Inspect air cleaner housing for debris and clean if necessary. Install new air filter element ensuring proper seating. Reinstall air cleaner lid and secure with wing nut or clips.

    Replace fuel filter
    Locate inline fuel filter between fuel pump and carburetor. Place rag under filter to catch fuel spillage. Use appropriate wrenches to loosen hose clamps or fittings on both sides of filter. Note fuel flow direction arrow on old filter. Remove old filter and install new filter with arrow pointing toward carburetor. Secure with hose clamps or fittings. Check for leaks after starting engine.
    ⚠️Fuel will spill when disconnecting filter. Have rags ready and work in well-ventilated area away from ignition sources.

    Replace spark plugs
    Remove spark plug wires one at a time, noting cylinder positions. Clean area around each spark plug before removal. Use 5/8" spark plug socket to remove all 8 plugs. Inspect old plugs for wear patterns and electrode condition. Gap new plugs to 0.035" using gap tool. Apply anti-seize compound to plug threads sparingly. Install new plugs hand-tight, then snug with socket wrench (do not overtighten). Reconnect spark plug wires to correct cylinders.

    Locate timing marks on harmonic balancer and timing tab. Clean marks if necessary. Connect timing light to cylinder #1 spark plug wire. Start engine and warm to operating temperature. With engine at idle (typically 650-700 RPM), aim timing light at marks. Initial timing should be approximately 5 degrees BTDC for standard compression. Loosen distributor hold-down bolt and rotate distributor as needed to adjust timing. Tighten hold-down bolt when correct.

    Replace PCV valve and breather filter
    Locate PCV valve in valve cover or intake manifold grommet. Pull PCV valve from grommet and disconnect hose. Install new PCV valve ensuring proper seating in grommet. If equipped with separate breather filter in opposite valve cover, remove and replace with new filter element. Check all crankcase ventilation hoses for cracks or deterioration.

    Drain and refill rear differential
    Position drain pan under rear differential cover. Remove all cover bolts except top two, then loosen top bolts and carefully pry cover away at bottom to drain fluid. Remove remaining bolts and cover. Clean mating surfaces thoroughly on axle housing and cover. Install cover with new gasket (or use RTV sealant). Locate fill plug on front of differential housing. Remove fill plug and add 80W-90 GL-5 gear oil until it reaches bottom of fill hole (approximately 2.5-3 quarts). Reinstall fill plug.

    Locate all grease fittings (zerk fittings) on front suspension, steering linkage, driveshaft universal joints, and any other chassis points. Clean each fitting before greasing. Using grease gun, pump multi-purpose chassis grease into each fitting until fresh grease appears at component seals or boot. Wipe away excess grease. Typical locations include upper and lower ball joints, tie rod ends, idler arm, pitman arm, and driveshaft U-joints.

    Inspect belts, hoses, and fluid levels
    With engine cool, inspect all drive belts for cracks, glazing, or fraying. Check belt tension (should deflect approximately 1/2 inch with moderate thumb pressure). Inspect all coolant hoses and heater hoses for cracks, soft spots, or leaks. Check radiator coolant level and add 50/50 coolant mixture if low. Check power steering fluid level (if equipped) and transmission fluid level with engine warm and running in Park. Check brake master cylinder fluid level and battery electrolyte level.

    Check tire pressure and rotate tires
    Use tire pressure gauge to check all tires including spare. Inflate to recommended pressure (typically 28-32 PSI for 1970 Rebel).
