Antenna

Remove and replace the radio antenna mast and/or base assembly on a 1970 AMC Rebel Machine.

• Antenna mast assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification or compatible aftermarket
• Antenna base gasket × 1 — Use OEM specification
• Antenna lead cable × 1 — Use OEM specification if damaged

Preparation

1. Ensure radio is turned off
2. Locate antenna on right front fender
3. If removing base assembly, access may be required from inside the fender well or under the hood depending on routing

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove antenna mast
   Unscrew the antenna mast by turning it counterclockwise. Grasp the mast firmly near the base and rotate to remove. If the mast is stuck, use needle-nose pliers wrapped with masking tape to prevent marring the chrome finish.

   Remove bezel and mounting nut
   From the exterior, unscrew the decorative bezel (if equipped) by turning counterclockwise. Then use a 7/16" wrench to remove the mounting nut securing the antenna base to the fender. Hold the base from inside the fender if necessary to prevent spinning.

   Access antenna cable connection
   Access the underside of the antenna base from inside the engine compartment or fender well. You may need to reach behind the inner fender panel. Locate the antenna lead cable connection at the base of the antenna assembly.

   Disconnect antenna cable
   Disconnect the antenna lead cable from the base assembly. Note the routing of the cable for reinstallation. If the cable is damaged or corroded, it should be replaced along with the antenna.

   Remove antenna base from fender
   Carefully pull the antenna base assembly through the fender hole from the exterior. Remove the old gasket from the fender surface and clean the mounting area of any debris or old sealant.

   Install new antenna base
   Place the new antenna base gasket on the fender mounting hole. Insert the new antenna base through the fender from the exterior, ensuring the gasket seats properly against the fender surface.

   Connect antenna cable
   From inside the fender well or engine compartment, connect the antenna lead cable to the new base assembly. Ensure the connection is secure and the cable is routed away from hot or moving components.

   Secure mounting nut and bezel
   Install the mounting nut on the antenna base from the exterior and tighten with a 7/16" wrench. Snug firmly but do not over-tighten to avoid distorting the fender or cracking the base. Install the decorative bezel if equipped.
9. 9

   Install antenna mast
   Thread the new antenna mast into the base by turning clockwise. Hand-tighten until snug. Do not use pliers or excessive force as this can damage the threads or ferrule seal.

Reassembly

1. Ensure antenna mast is straight and properly seated
2. Verify all connections are secure and cable routing is correct
3. Check that mounting nut is tight and bezel (if equipped) is properly positioned

Verification

• Turn on the radio and verify reception on AM and FM bands
• Extend and retract mast if power antenna equipped to verify proper operation
• Check for any rattles or looseness in the antenna assembly
• Inspect for proper seal at fender mounting point to prevent water intrusion
