This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the battery in a 1970 AMC Rebel Machine with 390ci V8 engine.

Warnings

⚠️Always disconnect the negative terminal first to prevent electrical shorts and potential sparks near the battery
Battery acid is corrosive - avoid contact with skin, eyes, and painted surfaces
Batteries are heavy (30-50 lbs) - use proper lifting technique to avoid injury
ℹ️Disconnecting the battery may reset radio presets and clock settings

Parts

  • Group 24 automotive battery × 1 — Use OEM specification or equivalent CCA rating

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Turn off all electrical accessories and remove key from ignition
  3. Open hood and prop securely
  4. Locate battery in engine compartment on passenger side near firewall

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect negative battery cable
Using a 10mm or 13mm wrench (depending on terminal type), loosen the bolt on the negative (-) battery terminal clamp. Remove the cable from the negative post and position it away from the battery to prevent accidental contact.
  2. 2
    Disconnect positive battery cable
Using the appropriate wrench, loosen the bolt on the positive (+) battery terminal clamp. Remove the cable from the positive post and position it away from the battery.
  3. 3
    Remove battery hold-down
Locate the battery hold-down bracket at the base of the battery. Remove the hold-down bolt or J-bolt and bracket using the appropriate socket or wrench. Set hardware aside for reinstallation.
  4. 4
    Remove battery from vehicle
Carefully lift the battery straight up and out of the battery tray. Use proper lifting technique with legs, not back. Place old battery in a safe location away from vehicle.
  5. 5
    Inspect and clean battery tray
Inspect battery tray for corrosion, cracks, or damage. Clean any corrosion using a wire brush and baking soda solution if needed. Wipe dry before installing new battery.
  6. 6
    Clean battery cable terminals
Use a battery terminal cleaner or wire brush to clean the inside of both positive and negative cable clamps. Remove all corrosion and buildup to ensure good electrical contact.
  7. 7
    Install new battery
Carefully lower the new battery into the battery tray, ensuring positive terminal is oriented toward the front of the vehicle (same orientation as original). Battery should sit flat and secure in tray.
  8. 8
    Install battery hold-down
Reinstall the battery hold-down bracket and secure with the bolt or J-bolt. Tighten securely to prevent battery movement, but do not overtighten as this can damage the battery case.
  9. 9
    Connect positive battery cable
Place the positive (+) cable clamp onto the positive battery post. Ensure clean metal-to-metal contact. Tighten the clamp bolt securely using the appropriate wrench.
  10. 10
    Connect negative battery cable
Place the negative (-) cable clamp onto the negative battery post. Ensure clean metal-to-metal contact. Tighten the clamp bolt securely. Expect a small spark when making final connection - this is normal.

Reassembly

  1. Apply battery terminal protectant spray to terminals to prevent future corrosion if desired
  2. Verify both terminals are tight and will not move when gently twisted
  3. Reset clock and radio presets as needed

Verification

  • Attempt to start the engine - it should crank normally and start
  • Check that all electrical accessories function properly (lights, radio, wipers, etc.)
  • Inspect battery terminals for any signs of arcing or poor connection
  • Verify battery is secure and does not move when gently rocked
