Preparation
- Ensure engine is completely cold to the touch
- Park vehicle on level ground and apply parking brake
- Disconnect negative battery cable

Procedure
- 1Drain engine coolantOpen radiator petcock or remove lower radiator hose to drain coolant into drain pan. If accessing a rear freeze plug, also drain engine block drain plugs if equipped. Collect all coolant for proper disposal or reuse if clean.

Using a freeze plug installation driver or large socket slightly smaller than the plug diameter, tap the plug evenly into the bore with a ball peen hammer. Drive the plug in until it is flush or slightly recessed (approximately 1/16" to 1/8") below the block surface. Ensure plug is seated evenly all around.
