Remove and replace the power steering return hose on a 1970 AMC Rebel Machine with 390ci V8 engine.
Warnings
⚠Power steering fluid is flammable and can damage painted surfaces. Clean any spills immediately.
ℹ️The return hose is low-pressure but will drain fluid when disconnected. Have drain pan ready.
⚠Engine should be cool to the touch before beginning work to avoid burns from nearby components.
Tools required

Jack and jack stands
Parts
- Power steering return hose × 1 — Use OEM specification or equivalent low-pressure hose
- Hose clamps (if not reusable) × 2 — Worm-gear style, appropriate diameter
Fluids
- Power steering fluid (ATF Type A or Dexron) — 1 qt
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
- Allow engine to cool completely if recently driven
- Place drain pan beneath power steering pump and reservoir area
- Optional: Raise front of vehicle with jack and support on jack stands for better access to lower hose connection
- Locate the return hose running from the power steering pump to the reservoir (this is the lower pressure hose, typically without reinforcement braiding)
Procedure
- 1Locate and identify return hose connectionsThe power steering return hose on the 390ci V8 connects from the bottom of the steering gear box to the power steering pump reservoir. It is the smaller diameter hose compared to the high-pressure feed line. Identify both connection points and the hose routing path.
- 2Remove hose clamp at reservoir endUsing hose clamp pliers or screwdriver, loosen the hose clamp securing the return hose to the power steering pump reservoir nipple. Slide the clamp back along the hose away from the connection point. Be prepared for fluid drainage.
- 3Disconnect hose from reservoirTwist and pull the return hose off the reservoir nipple. Immediately position the hose end into the drain pan. Allow fluid to drain from the hose and reservoir. You may need to work the hose back and forth while pulling to break it free if it has been in place for many years.
- 4Remove hose clamp at steering gear endLocate the lower connection point at the steering gear box return port. Loosen the hose clamp using hose clamp pliers or screwdriver and slide it away from the connection point along the hose.
- 5Disconnect hose from steering gearTwist and pull the return hose off the steering gear return port. Position the hose end into the drain pan and allow remaining fluid to drain completely. Remove the old hose from the vehicle, noting its routing path for installation of the new hose.
- 6Clean connection pointsUse a wire brush and shop rags to clean the reservoir nipple and steering gear return port. Remove any old hose material, corrosion, or debris to ensure proper sealing of the new hose.
- 7Install new hose at steering gearRoute the new return hose following the same path as the original, ensuring it does not contact the exhaust manifold or other heat sources. Slide a hose clamp onto the hose, then push the hose firmly onto the steering gear return port until it seats completely.
- 8Secure hose at steering gearPosition the hose clamp approximately 1/2 inch from the end of the hose over the connection point. Tighten the clamp securely with hose clamp pliers or screwdriver until the hose cannot be twisted by hand.
- 9Install hose at reservoirEnsure the hose routing does not create kinks or sharp bends. Slide a hose clamp onto the free end of the hose, then push the hose firmly onto the power steering pump reservoir nipple until fully seated.
- 10Secure hose at reservoirPosition the hose clamp approximately 1/2 inch from the end of the hose over the reservoir nipple connection. Tighten the clamp securely until the hose cannot be twisted by hand.
- 11Refill power steering fluidFill the power steering reservoir to the FULL or MAX mark with fresh power steering fluid (ATF Type A or Dexron compatible). Start the engine and turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock several times while the vehicle is stationary.
- 12Bleed air from systemWith engine running, continue turning the steering wheel fully left and right slowly 10-15 times to purge air from the system. Check reservoir level frequently and add fluid as needed. Fluid level will drop as air is displaced.
Reassembly
- Verify all hose clamps are tight and properly positioned
- Inspect hose routing to ensure clearance from exhaust and moving components
- Lower vehicle from jack stands if raised
- Wipe down all components and check for fluid leaks
Verification
- With engine running, inspect both hose connections for leaks while turning steering wheel
- Check power steering reservoir fluid level and top off to FULL mark if needed
- Test drive vehicle and verify normal power steering operation with no whining or groaning noises
- Re-check fluid level after test drive and inspect hose connections once more for any seepage
