This procedure covers removal and replacement of the steering wheel on a 1970 AMC Rebel Machine, including horn contact and turn signal canceling mechanism.

Warnings

⚠️Disconnect battery negative terminal before beginning work to prevent accidental horn activation or electrical shorts
Never strike the steering shaft directly or use excessive force, as this can damage the collapsible steering column safety feature
The turn signal canceling cam is plastic and easily broken; handle with care during removal and installation

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
  2. Ensure front wheels are pointed straight ahead
  3. Disconnect negative battery cable and secure away from battery post
  4. Allow sufficient time for any residual electrical charge to dissipate (approximately 5 minutes)

Procedure

  1. 1
    Mark steering wheel position
Before removal, use masking tape or a paint marker to mark the relationship between the steering wheel and the steering shaft. This ensures proper alignment during reinstallation and maintains the straight-ahead wheel position.
  2. 2
    Remove horn button assembly
Carefully pry the center horn button/emblem from the steering wheel using a flathead screwdriver wrapped in tape to prevent scratching. Some models use a twist-lock design while others simply snap out. Disconnect the horn wire from the back of the button assembly.
  3. 3
    Disconnect horn contact
Remove the horn contact spring and insulator from the steering shaft. Note the orientation and position of these components for reassembly. The spring typically slides over the turn signal canceling cam.
  4. 4
    Remove steering wheel retaining nut
Using the appropriate socket, remove the large retaining nut from the end of the steering shaft. This nut typically requires significant force to loosen. Note whether there is a flat washer or lock washer under the nut and keep it with the nut for reinstallation.
  5. 5
    Install steering wheel puller
Thread the steering wheel puller bolts into the threaded holes in the steering wheel hub. These holes are specifically designed for puller use. Ensure the puller center screw contacts the center of the steering shaft, not the threads. Tighten the puller bolts evenly to apply equal pressure.
  6. 6
    Remove steering wheel
Gradually tighten the center screw of the steering wheel puller while keeping pressure even on both sides. Apply steady pressure rather than impact. The wheel should release from the steering shaft taper with a pop. Never hammer on the steering shaft or wheel during this process.
  7. 7
    Remove turn signal canceling cam
Carefully slide the turn signal canceling cam off the steering shaft. This plastic component has a tab that engages the turn signal switch and is easily damaged. Inspect for cracks or wear and replace if necessary.
  8. 8
    Prepare replacement steering wheel
If installing a new or different steering wheel, transfer any necessary components from the old wheel. Ensure the new wheel has the correct spline pattern and diameter for the 1970 AMC Rebel Machine. Verify that horn button mounting provisions match.
  9. 9
    Install turn signal canceling cam
Slide the turn signal canceling cam onto the steering shaft with the engagement tab positioned correctly for the turn signal switch. Ensure it moves freely and sits flush against the switch housing.
  10. 10
    Install steering wheel
Align the steering wheel with your previously made alignment marks and the splines on the steering shaft. The wheel should slide onto the shaft with moderate hand pressure. Ensure complete seating onto the taper before installing the retaining nut.
  11. 11
    Install retaining nut
Install any washers removed during disassembly, then thread the steering wheel retaining nut onto the shaft. Tighten the nut firmly to specification (typically 20-30 ft-lbs for this era AMC, though verify with factory service manual). The nut must be tight enough to prevent any play but avoid overtightening.
  12. 12
    Install horn contact components
Install the horn contact insulator and spring over the steering shaft and canceling cam in the reverse order of removal. Ensure proper contact alignment for horn function.
  13. 13
    Install horn button assembly
Reconnect the horn wire to the horn button assembly. Align the button/emblem with the steering wheel center and press or twist into place until it locks securely.

Reassembly

  1. Reconnect the negative battery cable
  2. Double-check that all components are properly secured and no tools or parts are left in the steering column area
  3. Verify steering wheel is centered when front wheels are pointing straight ahead

Verification

  • Start engine and verify turn signals self-cancel properly after completing a turn
  • Test horn operation by pressing the horn button - it should sound immediately
  • Turn steering wheel fully lock-to-lock in both directions to ensure no binding or interference
  • Check for any abnormal noises from the steering column during operation
  • Verify steering wheel does not have any looseness or play on the steering shaft
