Washer Pump

Remove and replace the windshield washer pump on a 1970 AMC Rebel Machine to restore washer fluid spray function.

• Windshield washer pump × 1 — Use OEM specification or equivalent 12V washer pump
• Washer fluid hose (if deteriorated) × 1 — 3/16" ID rubber hose
• Hose clamps (if needed) × 2 — Small diameter worm-gear clamps

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Turn ignition off and remove key
3. Open hood and secure with prop rod
4. Locate washer fluid reservoir and pump assembly - typically mounted on passenger side inner fender or firewall
5. Place drain pan beneath work area to catch any spilled washer fluid

Procedure

   Disconnect electrical connector
   Locate the electrical connector on the washer pump motor. Pull the connector straight off the pump terminals. On some pumps this may be a spade-type connector that slides off, or a molded connector that requires pressing a release tab.

   Disconnect outlet hose
   Using pliers, squeeze and slide the hose clamp (if present) away from the pump outlet. Gently twist and pull the rubber washer hose off the pump outlet fitting. Point the hose into the drain pan to allow any fluid to drain out.

   Remove pump from reservoir
   The pump is typically pressed into a grommet in the reservoir or held by a mounting bracket. If pressed into a grommet, firmly grasp the pump body and pull straight out with a twisting motion. If bracket-mounted, remove the retaining fasteners with appropriate socket or wrench and pull pump free. Allow washer fluid to drain from pump opening into drain pan.

   Inspect reservoir and grommet
   Check the rubber grommet or mounting point in the reservoir for cracks or deterioration. Inspect the reservoir itself for cracks. If the grommet is damaged or has lost elasticity, pry it out with a flathead screwdriver and replace with new grommet.

   Install new washer pump
   If pump uses a grommet mount, lubricate the pump inlet tube with soapy water or washer fluid. Press the new pump firmly into the reservoir grommet with a twisting motion until fully seated. If bracket-mounted, position pump and secure with original hardware.

   Connect outlet hose
   Push the washer hose firmly onto the pump outlet fitting until it bottoms out. If hose is hard or cracked, replace with new hose. Position hose clamp over the hose connection and tighten securely with pliers or screwdriver.

   Connect electrical connector
   Push the electrical connector firmly onto the pump motor terminals until it clicks or seats fully. Ensure connection is secure and will not vibrate loose.

   Refill washer fluid reservoir
   Add windshield washer fluid to the reservoir until it reaches the full mark. Use this opportunity to top off fluid lost during the repair.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all electrical connections are secure and properly routed
2. Verify all hose connections are tight and clamps are properly positioned
3. Wipe up any spilled washer fluid from engine compartment

Verification

• Turn ignition to ON position (engine does not need to run)
• Activate windshield washer system and verify pump runs smoothly without grinding or unusual noise
• Verify washer fluid sprays properly onto windshield with adequate pressure
• Check for leaks at pump connections and reservoir while pump is running
• Check reservoir fluid level after testing and top off if necessary
• Verify pump stops immediately when washer switch is released
