The 2022 Q4 Sportback e-tron is built on VW's MEB electric platform and shares many components with the ID.4. Early examples show teething issues with transmission mounts, software glitches, and high-voltage system components that are expensive when they fail outside warranty.
Transmission/Motor Mount Failure
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 15,000-40,000 mi
Symptoms: Clunking or banging on acceleration or deceleration, Vibration through floor or steering wheel especially during regen braking, Visible sagging or torn rubber on mount inspection
Fix: Replace motor mounts, typically both sides done together. 2.5-3.5 hours labor. MEB platform mounts are prone to tearing early due to torque characteristics of electric motors and inadequate rubber compound in early production.
Symptoms: Grinding or whining noise from drive unit during acceleration, Loss of power or reduced performance warnings, Transmission fault codes and limp mode, Metal shavings in gearbox oil (if serviceable)
Fix: Requires complete gearbox removal and rebuild or replacement. Some cases need full drive unit swap (motor + gearbox assembly). 8-12 hours labor for R&R, more if rebuild required. VW/Audi has issued software updates but some units have internal gear damage.
Estimated cost: $4,500-8,500
Inverter and High-Voltage Electronics Failures
Occasional · high severity
Symptoms: Complete loss of propulsion with error messages, Reduced power warnings and crawl-speed only operation, Charging issues or inability to charge, High-voltage system fault codes
Fix: Inverter replacement requires high-voltage shutdown procedures and certification. 4-6 hours labor plus diagnostic time. Some failures are software-related and fixable with updates, but hardware failures require complete unit replacement.
Estimated cost: $3,500-7,000
HVAC Evaporator Leaks and Heat Pump Failures
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 25,000-50,000 mi
Symptoms: Loss of cabin heating or cooling efficiency, Reduced range in cold weather beyond normal, Refrigerant leak warnings or low coolant messages, Hissing sounds from under dash
Fix: Evaporator requires full dash removal. 12-16 hours labor. Heat pump system is complex and critical for EV range in cold climates. Some units have faulty O-rings or weak solder joints from factory.
Estimated cost: $2,800-4,500
Gear Position Indication (PRNDL) Software Glitch
Occasional · medium severity
Symptoms: Incorrect gear display on instrument cluster, Vehicle stuck in Park electronically despite shifter movement, Unable to shift out of Park intermittently, Warning lights related to transmission system
Fix: Covered under NHTSA recall - software update typically resolves issue. 0.5-1.0 hour labor for flash. Some cases require shifter module replacement if hardware fault present, adding 2-3 hours labor.
Estimated cost: $0-800
High-Voltage Battery Module Degradation
Rare · high severity
Typical onset: 40,000-80,000 mi
Symptoms: Significant range loss beyond normal degradation (more than 15-20%), Battery cell imbalance warnings, Reduced charging speed or inability to DC fast charge, Vehicle limiting power output to protect battery
Fix: Individual module replacement possible but requires complete pack disassembly. 10-16 hours labor depending on which modules. Full pack replacement is 8-12 hours but catastrophically expensive. Most covered under 8yr/100k warranty but post-warranty costs are vehicle-totaling.
Estimated cost: $2,500-5,000 per module, $18,000-25,000 full pack
Owner tips
Keep software updated religiously - many early issues resolved via OTA or dealer updates
Inspect motor mounts every 15,000 miles if you drive aggressively or in cold climates
Document any charging issues or range anomalies while under 8yr/100k battery warranty
Use gentle acceleration for first 5 miles in freezing temps to protect gearbox
Independent shops need VW/Audi high-voltage certification - not all can work on these
Buy only with remaining factory warranty or comprehensive extended coverage - post-warranty high-voltage component costs can exceed vehicle value quickly.

POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:GEAR POSITION INDICATION (PRNDL) · 25V120000
2025-02-27
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2021-2023 ID.4, 2022-2023 Audi Q4 e-Tron, and Q4 e-Tron Sportback vehicles. The instrument panel may not properly display the transmission gear lever indicator. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 102, "Transmission Shift Lever Sequence, Starter Interlock, and Transmission Braking Effect."
Consequence: Failure to display the gear position may result in a vehicle rollaway if the parking brake is not engaged, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will update the brake control unit software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 14, 2025. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 or Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 97H3. Audi's number for this recall is 454R.
