Symptoms: metallic knocking at idle that worsens with RPM, oil pressure fluctuations, metal shavings in oil filter or pan, sudden catastrophic engine failure if ignored

Fix: Preventive bearing replacement is 12-15 hours labor with engine in car, requires special tools and precise torque specs. If spun bearings damage crank journals, you're looking at full engine-out teardown, crank machining or replacement, potentially new pistons if debris circulated. Many opt for short block at that point. Rod bearings should be inspected by 60k on track-driven cars, 80k on street cars.

Fix: The crank hub bolt can stretch or back out, allowing the harmonic balancer to wobble or separate. BMW issued a revised single-use bolt and updated torque spec. Proper fix requires engine-out or partial front subframe drop for access, replace bolt and hub, verify crank snout isn't damaged, re-time engine if chain skipped. 8-12 hours labor depending on damage assessment. Some owners do preventive bolt replacement at 40-50k.

Fix: The external transmission oil cooler develops leaks at crimped hose connections or cooler core. Requires raising car, draining trans fluid, replacing cooler assembly and lines, refilling with ZF Lifeguard 8 fluid. 3-4 hours labor. Address promptly — low fluid kills the ZF8 quickly.

Symptoms: clunking on hard acceleration or deceleration, excessive drivetrain movement visible under hood, vibration at idle, slop when shifting from drive to reverse

Fix: Hydraulic engine mounts and the transmission mount deteriorate from the S55's torque and vibration. Most replace all three motor mounts and trans mount as a set. 4-6 hours labor total. Upgraded poly or billet-insert mounts available for track use but increase NVH. OEM replacement restores factory feel.

Fix: The plastic hot-side charge pipe from turbo to intercooler can crack or blow an end-tank connection under boost spikes, especially on tuned cars or aggressive driving. Aluminum aftermarket replacements are preventive upgrades. OEM plastic replacement is 2-3 hours labor, aftermarket takes similar time. Not a safety issue but strands you immediately.

Fix: Direct injection means no fuel washing intake valves, leading to carbon accumulation on valve backs and injector tips. Walnut-blasting intake valves is 4-6 hours, injector cleaning or replacement adds 2-3 hours. Many combine with spark plug service. Running quality fuel and occasional Italian tune-ups help but don't prevent entirely.
