Fix: Replace both VANOS units (intake and exhaust). Requires removing valve covers, timing components access. Plan on 12-16 hours labor if doing both. Upgraded aftermarket units (Beisan or Dr. VANOS) are mandatory—OEM units will fail again. Add another 4-6 hours if doing timing chain guides while you're in there, which you should.

Fix: The ZF A5S 560Z six-speed auto cannot handle the S62's torque long-term. Output shaft bearings wear, clutch packs burn, torque converter fails. Full rebuild with upgraded clutches and bearings: 16-20 hours labor. Many shops won't touch these—expect to ship to a specialist. A used known-good transmission is sometimes cheaper than a rebuild. The manual transmission E39 M5s don't have this issue but command $15k+ premium.

Fix: The plastic chain guides disintegrate and the chain can jump teeth or worse. Replace all guides, tensioners, and chain while doing VANOS. Engine partially disassembled from front: 18-22 hours if combined with VANOS work. Do NOT defer this—chain jumping will destroy valves and pistons instantly. Use updated metal-backed guides.

Fix: E39 chassis subframe mounts tear the unibody mounting points. Requires reinforcement plates welded in by a competent shop familiar with this issue. Subframe must be dropped (8-12 hours), then welding/plating adds another 4-6 hours. Some use bolt-in reinforcements (Condor Speed Shop kit) to avoid welding. Catch it early before the mounts rip completely through.
