The 2021 M850i uses BMW's S63 twin-turbo V8 paired with the ZF 8HP transmission in the G15 chassis. While newer than the problematic N63 engines, early S63s still face turbo and cooling issues, plus the platform brings expensive electronics and adaptive suspension headaches.
Turbocharger Wastegate Rattle and Failure
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 40,000-80,000 mi
Symptoms: Rattling noise on cold start that disappears when warm, Underboost codes (30FF, 30FD), Reduced power or limp mode, Visible oil seepage around turbo housings
Fix: S63 turbos use integrated wastegate actuators that fail prematurely. Replacement requires removing turbos from the hot-V, new gaskets, coolant flush. 12-16 hours labor, both turbos typically done together for longevity.
Estimated cost: $8,000-12,000
Transmission Oil Cooler Line Leaks
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 30,000-70,000 mi
Symptoms: Transmission fluid puddles under engine bay center, Low transmission fluid warning on iDrive, Burning smell after highway driving, Transmission slipping or harsh shifts when fluid is low
Fix: The quick-disconnect cooler lines at the radiator corrode or crack at the fittings. Line replacement plus fluid refill and adaptation. 3-5 hours depending on access and if radiator needs partial removal.
Estimated cost: $800-1,500
Adaptive M Suspension Damper Failures
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 50,000-90,000 mi
Symptoms: Suspension malfunction warning on dash, Stuck in one damping mode (Comfort or Sport+), Clunking over bumps from one corner, Uneven ride height side-to-side
Fix: Electronic dampers fail at the internal solenoid or develop seal leaks. Each damper is $1,200-1,800 from BMW; alignment required after. 2-3 hours per corner including alignment.
Estimated cost: $2,000-3,500
High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) Failure
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 60,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: Long crank or no-start when hot, Fuel pressure system fault codes (2E7E, 2E81), Rough idle and misfires under load, Metal shavings in fuel filter during service
Fix: S63 uses twin HPFPs in the valley. Failure sends debris through injectors requiring full fuel system flush, new pumps, filters, and often injectors. 10-14 hours if injectors are involved.
Estimated cost: $4,500-8,000
Coolant Crossover Pipe Leaks
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 50,000-90,000 mi
Symptoms: Coolant smell in cabin or under hood, Low coolant warning despite no visible external leaks, Steam from engine bay after shutdown, Overheating under sustained load
Fix: Plastic crossover pipes in the valley crack at heat-cycled joints. Requires valley teardown including intake manifold removal, coolant system flush. 8-12 hours labor depending on access.
Estimated cost: $2,500-4,000
Backup Camera Intermittent Failure (Recall Related)
Common · low severity
Symptoms: Backup camera shows black screen or 'camera unavailable', Works intermittently after car sits or after rain, Parking sensors still function normally
Fix: Connector corrosion or camera module failure. Recall 21V-484 addresses some units but doesn't cover all failures. Camera replacement or harness repair, 1-2 hours.
Estimated cost: $400-900
Carbon Buildup on Intake Valves
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 60,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: Rough cold starts with misfires, Loss of power at high RPM, Increased fuel consumption, Check engine light with multiple misfire codes
Fix: Direct-injection only means no fuel wash on valves. Walnut blasting required every 60-80k mi. 6-8 hours to remove intake manifold, blast all eight cylinders, clean throttles.
Estimated cost: $1,200-1,800
Owner tips
Change transmission fluid every 40k miles despite 'lifetime fill' claims—ZF 8HP longevity depends on it
Use only BMW-approved 0W-30 oil and keep intervals at 7,500 miles max; S63 turbos are oil-sensitive
Budget $2,000/year for maintenance and repairs after warranty; this is a $100k+ car with $100k+ repair costs
Get a pre-purchase inspection focusing on turbos (cold start rattle test) and suspension error codes
Buy only with factory warranty remaining or a bulletproof extended warranty—post-warranty ownership costs rival the car payment itself.

When shifting into Reverse, a small portion of the rearview image may be obscured, or the screen may not illuminate. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."
Consequence: If the driver relies on only the rearview camera image, the missing or reduced rearview image view can increase the risk of a crash or injury.
Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the rearview camera software and update it if necessary, free of charge. The recall began April 16, 2021. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
