Symptoms: metallic knocking or rattling from engine, excessive oil consumption (quart per 1,000 mi or worse), oil pressure warning light, white or blue smoke from exhaust, sudden loss of power or engine seizure

Fix: Complete engine rebuild (pistons, rings, bearings, often crankshaft machining) or short-block replacement. 18-24 labor hours for full rebuild, 12-16 for short-block swap if available. These three-cylinders run high cylinder pressures and heat, causing piston ring land failures and bearing wear. Many end up needing complete engines from GM.

Fix: Head gasket replacement on these small turbo engines requires head removal, resurfacing, and often new bolts/studs. 10-14 labor hours. The aluminum head/iron block interface under turbo heat cycling causes frequent failures. Many shops recommend doing both timing chains and water pump while in there.

Symptoms: transmission fluid spots under vehicle (red or brown), transmission running hot, burnt smell, harsh or delayed shifts when fluid is low

Fix: Replace transmission oil cooler lines and fittings. The quick-connect fittings corrode and the rubber lines deteriorate, especially in salt states. 2-3 labor hours. Often discovered during oil changes. Critical to catch early before transmission damage from low fluid.

Fix: Replace turbocharger wastegate actuator or complete turbo assembly if wastegate mechanism is seized. 4-6 labor hours. Carbon buildup on the small turbos causes actuator binding. Some can be cleaned, most need replacement. Aftermarket actuators available but OE recommended for longevity.

Fix: Transmission fluid and filter service with GM-specific CVT fluid, sometimes requires transmission control module software update. 1.5 labor hours for fluid service. GM issued TSBs for calibration updates. If mechanical damage already occurred, CVT rebuild or replacement is 12-18 hours and $4,000-7,000. Early fluid services critical.
