The 2022 Buick Envision rides on GM's C1XX platform with the 2.0L turbo LTG engine and 9-speed automatic. While it's relatively new, early patterns show turbo-related issues and transmission cooler failures that align with known weaknesses in this powertrain family.
Transmission Oil Cooler Failure
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 40,000-80,000 mi
Symptoms: Transmission fluid leaking from cooler lines or radiator area, Overheating transmission, harsh shifts or slipping, Pink or milky fluid indicating coolant contamination, Check engine light with transmission temp codes
Fix: Replace transmission oil cooler assembly and flush both coolant and ATF systems if cross-contamination occurred. If coolant got into trans, expect internal damage requiring rebuild. Labor: 3-5 hours for cooler only, 15-25 hours if transmission needs rebuild.
Estimated cost: $800-1,200 cooler only, $4,500-7,000 with transmission rebuild
2.0L Turbo Piston Ring Failure / Carbon Buildup
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 60,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: Excessive oil consumption (quart per 1,000 miles or worse), Blue smoke from exhaust on startup or acceleration, Loss of power, rough idle, Carbon fouling on spark plugs, misfires
Fix: LTG engines are known for carbon buildup on intake valves (no port injection) and piston ring land issues. Minor cases need walnut blasting and decarbonizing service. Severe cases require short block replacement or full rebuild with updated pistons. Labor: 2-3 hours for cleaning, 18-25 hours for engine rebuild.
Estimated cost: $500-800 for carbon cleaning, $5,500-8,500 for rebuild/short block
Transmission Mount Failure
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 50,000-90,000 mi
Symptoms: Clunking or banging when shifting from Park to Drive, Excessive vibration at idle or during acceleration, Engine rocking noticeably when revving in Park, Visible separation or tearing of rubber mount
Fix: The hydraulic transmission mount on these fails prematurely, likely due to weight of engine/trans combo and torque delivery. Replace mount assembly. Labor: 1.5-2.5 hours.
Estimated cost: $350-600
Turbocharger Wastegate Actuator / Boost Control Issues
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 70,000-110,000 mi
Symptoms: Check engine light with underboost or overboost codes (P0299, P0234), Loss of power, sluggish acceleration, Turbo whistle or fluttering sounds, Limp mode activation under load
Fix: Wastegate actuator sticks or electronic solenoid fails. Sometimes cleanable, often requires turbo replacement since actuator is integrated. Labor: 5-7 hours for turbo replacement.
Estimated cost: $1,800-3,200
Lighting Control Module Software Glitch
Occasional · low severity
Symptoms: Headlights flickering or failing to turn on/off properly, Daytime running lights not functioning, Warning messages on instrument cluster about exterior lighting, Intermittent high-beam issues
Fix: NHTSA recall addresses software bug in lighting control module. Dealer reflash required, sometimes module replacement if corrupted. Labor: 0.5-1 hour for reflash, 2 hours if module replacement needed.
Estimated cost: $0 if recall, $400-700 if out of pocket for module
Symptoms: Hard starting, extended cranking, Intermittent stalling or loss of power, Rough running, hesitation under load, Check engine light with fuel trim or pressure codes
Fix: In-tank fuel filter rarely serviced leads to pump failure or contamination issues. Requires tank drop and pump module replacement. Labor: 3-4 hours.
Estimated cost: $800-1,400
Owner tips
Use Top Tier fuel exclusively and consider fuel system cleaner every 15k miles to combat direct-injection carbon buildup
Check transmission fluid level and condition every oil change — cooler failures happen fast and destroy the trans if ignored
Monitor oil consumption closely; if burning more than half a quart between changes, address it before ring damage becomes catastrophic
Keep up with the recall check — lighting module reflash is free and prevents annoying failures
Decent SUV when maintained, but the LTG engine and 9-speed trans have documented issues that can cost $5k+ if ignored — buy with warranty or extensive pre-purchase inspection focused on oil consumption and transmission cooler condition.

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020-2023 Cadillac CT4 and CT5; 2021-2023 Buick Envision; and 2022-2023 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles. The daytime running lights (DRLs) may not deactivate when the headlights are on. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."
Consequence: DRLs that do not deactivate as intended may result in a glare, reducing visibility, and increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: The body control module software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 23, 2023. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is N222386380. This recall expands previous recall number 22V-827.
