The 2022 CT5-V Blackwing with its LT4 supercharged 6.2L V8 is a track-capable monster that shares powertrain DNA with the Corvette Z06 and Camaro ZL1. When driven hard—and most owners do—it reveals specific weaknesses in lubrication, heat management, and the manual transmission's supporting components.
LT4 Supercharger Heat-Soak and Intercooler Inadequacy on Track
Common · medium severity
Symptoms: power loss after 2-3 hot laps, limp mode activation during sustained high-RPM runs, intake air temps exceeding 140°F, timing retard codes under boost
Fix: Factory intercooler system is marginal for track use. Aftermarket heat exchanger upgrade or auxiliary cooling mod takes 4-6 hours. Not a failure per se, but a design limitation that shows up immediately in performance driving.
Estimated cost: $2,000-3,500
Transmission Oil Cooler Line Leaks (Manual Tremec TR-6060)
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 15,000-40,000 mi
Symptoms: gear oil drips on driveway, burning oil smell after spirited driving, low fluid warning if equipped, visible seepage at cooler line fittings
Fix: The external oil cooler lines for the manual transmission can weep or crack at crimp points, especially after heat cycles. Replacing lines and refilling with proper GL-4 fluid takes 3-4 hours with proper lift access. Early detection prevents trans damage.
Estimated cost: $800-1,400
Rear Differential Ring and Pinion Wear from Launch Control Abuse
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 20,000-50,000 mi
Symptoms: whine or howl during deceleration, clunk on throttle tip-in, vibration at highway speeds, metallic debris in diff fluid during service
Fix: Repeated launch control use, especially with drag radials or slicks, hammers the limited-slip rear end. Ring and pinion replacement requires diff disassembly, setup with shims and backlash measurement—8-12 hours labor. Often discover carrier bearing damage too.
Estimated cost: $3,200-5,000
Carbon Buildup on Intake Valves (Direct Injection)
Common · low severity
Typical onset: 40,000-70,000 mi
Symptoms: rough idle when cold, hesitation or misfire under light throttle, reduced fuel economy, P0300-series codes with no obvious ignition fault
Fix: LT4 is direct-injection only—no port fuel to wash valves. Walnut blasting both heads takes 6-8 hours with supercharger and intake manifold removal. Preventive catch can install recommended early.
Estimated cost: $1,200-1,800
Manual Transmission Mount Failure from High-Torque Launches
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 25,000-60,000 mi
Symptoms: excessive shifter vibration at idle, clunk during 1-2 shift, visible transmission movement during hard acceleration, misalignment causing difficult gear engagement
Fix: Factory mount can tear or separate, especially with sticky tires and aggressive clutch dumps. Replacement requires trans support and subframe access—4-5 hours. Upgraded polyurethane mounts available but increase NVH.
Estimated cost: $600-1,100
Fuel System Vapor Lock and Starvation in Extended High-G Cornering
Rare · high severity
Symptoms: stumble or lean misfire in long sweepers, fuel pressure drop under sustained lateral load, brief power loss mid-corner at track events, no codes stored, issue self-corrects
Fix: Tank baffling and pump pickup location can allow fuel slosh in extended 1.0G+ cornering. Aftermarket surge tank or modified fuel hat required for serious track work—10-14 hours with tank drop, pump work, and custom lines. Factory doesn't consider this a defect.
Estimated cost: $2,800-4,500
Supercharger Coupler Wear and Snout Bearing Noise
Rare · medium severity
Typical onset: 60,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: whine pitch change under boost, rattling at idle that goes away under load, rubber dust in blower area, visible coupler deterioration on inspection
Fix: Eaton TVS coupler can crack or delaminate; snout bearings can develop play. Supercharger R&R for coupler or bearing service is 8-10 hours. Preventive inspection at 50k miles recommended for hard-driven examples.
Estimated cost: $2,000-3,200
Owner tips
Install an air-oil separator or catch can immediately—carbon buildup is inevitable without it and walnut blasting is expensive.
If you track the car, budget for upgraded intercooler and transmission/differential coolers before pushing limits—heat is the enemy.
Use only GL-4 spec fluid in the manual transmission; GL-5 destroys synchros. Change every 15k miles if tracking.
Rear diff fluid should be changed every 20-30k miles with hard use; inspect for metal shavings—early warning for gear damage.
Run premium fuel exclusively (93 octane minimum); timing pull from lower grades robs power and increases knock risk under boost.
Buy one used if the maintenance records prove it wasn't a weekend warrior's abuse toy—these are phenomenal machines when maintained, but track-day heroes age fast and hide expensive grenades.
