The 2023 CT5-V Blackwing is a 668-hp manual or 10-speed automatic monster built on GM's Alpha platform with the supercharged LT4 V8. When pushed hard—and owners DO push them—heat management and forced-induction stress show up in specific patterns, particularly on track-driven examples.
Transmission Oil Cooler Failure (10-Speed Auto)
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 15,000-40,000 mi
Symptoms: transmission overheating warnings on track or spirited driving, limp mode activation after sustained high-speed runs, burnt ATF smell, shifting harshness after heat cycling
Fix: Factory cooler undersized for sustained performance use. Requires cooler replacement, full ATF flush, and inspection of transmission internals for heat damage. 4-6 hours labor depending on damage assessment.
Estimated cost: $1,800-3,200
Supercharger Heat Soak and Intercooler Inadequacy
Common · medium severity
Symptoms: power loss after 2-3 hard pulls, intake air temps climbing past 140°F, timing pull visible on scanner during track sessions, fuel octane compensation kicking in
Fix: Factory heat exchanger and intercooler system cannot sustain advertised power under repeated load. Not a failure per se, but a design limitation. Aftermarket heat exchanger upgrades run 6-8 hours installed. This is modification territory, not warranty repair.
Estimated cost: $3,500-5,500
Rear Differential Fluid Overheating
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 10,000-30,000 mi
Symptoms: whining or growling from rear axle after track use, electronic limited-slip engaging erratically when hot, burnt gear oil smell, shuddering during aggressive cornering
Fix: Electronic limited-slip diff generates serious heat under load; factory fluid change intervals inadequate for performance use. Requires fluid drain, inspection for clutch pack wear, and refill with proper friction-modified fluid. 2 hours labor. Severe cases need clutch pack replacement adding 4-6 hours.
Estimated cost: $400-800 for fluid service, $2,200-3,500 if clutch packs damaged
Fuel System Vapor Lock / Heat Soak
Occasional · medium severity
Symptoms: hot-start stumbling or extended cranking, hesitation or misfire immediately after shutdown and restart, fuel pressure drop visible on scanner when heat-soaked, CEL for fuel trim running rich/lean
Fix: Fuel lines and filter positioned near exhaust components; supercharged engine generates massive underhood temps. Fuel filter replacement with heat shielding upgrade addresses most cases. 2-3 hours labor. Persistent cases need fuel line rerouting or aftermarket solutions.
Estimated cost: $600-1,200
Connecting Rod Bearing Wear (High-RPM Use)
Rare · high severity
Typical onset: 30,000-60,000 mi
Symptoms: rod knock at startup when cold, disappears when warm, metallic rattle at idle that worsens under load, oil pressure dropping at hot idle, metal debris visible in oil filter media
Fix: LT4 rod bearings show accelerated wear under sustained high-RPM operation, particularly 6,000+ RPM shifts with performance driving. Requires engine-out teardown, bearing inspection/replacement, and crankshaft polishing if journals are scored. 25-35 hours labor. Severe cases need full short block.
Estimated cost: $8,500-12,000 for bearing job, $18,000-25,000 for short block replacement
Transmission Mount Failure (Manual Transmission)
Common · low severity
Typical onset: 20,000-50,000 mi
Symptoms: clunk when engaging clutch from stop, excessive shifter vibration at idle, transmission whine changes pitch with throttle input, visible movement of transmission tailhousing under load
Fix: Tremec TR-6060 with 659 lb-ft overwhelms factory rubber mounts, particularly with aggressive clutch dumps. Requires vehicle lift, driveshaft removal, and mount replacement. 3-4 hours labor. Polyurethane upgrades last longer but increase NVH.
Estimated cost: $600-1,000
Owner tips
If tracking this car, upgrade transmission and differential fluids to full-synthetic race spec immediately—factory fills are inadequate for sustained performance
Monitor oil consumption closely in first 10,000 miles; LT4 rings can take time to seat, especially if driven gently during break-in
Perform oil analysis every 5,000 miles if regularly exceeding 6,000 RPM—early bearing wear shows up in aluminum and iron content first
Aftermarket oil cooler is not optional for road course use; factory cooler is barely adequate for street driving
Keep fuel filter changes at 20,000-mile intervals rather than GM's 50,000-mile spec if running E85 blends or track gas
Buy it if you understand you're getting a track-capable weapon that needs track-level maintenance—budget $2,000-3,000/year beyond normal service if you actually use the performance.

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020-2023 Cadillac CT4 and CT5; 2021-2023 Buick Envision; and 2022-2023 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles. The daytime running lights (DRLs) may not deactivate when the headlights are on. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."
Consequence: DRLs that do not deactivate as intended may result in a glare, reducing visibility, and increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: The body control module software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 23, 2023.
