The 2009 CTS-V packs a phenomenal LSA supercharged V8 and TR6060 six-speed manual, but heat management issues and the platform's appetite for hard driving create predictable failure points that separate owners who maintain them from those who grenade them.
Transmission Oil Cooler Line Failure
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 60,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: Transmission fluid puddle under vehicle, typically passenger side, Low transmission fluid warning, Burnt transmission smell or slipping shifts if driven low on fluid
Fix: The factory crimped cooler lines corrode and burst, dumping ATF. Requires replacement of both cooler lines and often the cooler itself if contaminated. 2-3 hours labor if caught early, but if the transmission ran low and clutches burned, you're looking at a full rebuild (12-16 hours).
Estimated cost: $400-800 for lines/cooler only, $3,500-5,500 if transmission damage occurred
Rear Differential Bushings and Mounts
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 50,000-90,000 mi
Symptoms: Clunking on hard acceleration or deceleration, Vibration at highway speeds, Visible differential movement under power
Fix: The rear diff bushings tear from hard launches and weight transfer. Polyurethane replacements recommended over OEM rubber. Requires subframe support and diff drop. 3-4 hours labor.
Estimated cost: $600-1,200
Piston Ring Land Failure (Hard-Driven Examples)
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 80,000-140,000 mi
Symptoms: Excessive oil consumption (more than 1 qt per 1,000 mi), White or blue smoke on cold start or hard acceleration, Loss of compression on one or more cylinders, Check engine light with misfire codes
Fix: The cast hypereutectic pistons in the LSA can crack ring lands under sustained high boost, especially in tuned or track-driven cars. Requires engine removal and complete rebuild with forged pistons if you plan to keep driving hard. 25-35 hours labor for full rebuild.
Estimated cost: $8,000-14,000
Supercharger Heat Exchanger Pump and Reservoir
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 70,000-110,000 mi
Symptoms: Reduced performance and boost levels, Supercharger whine changes pitch, Coolant reservoir low without external leaks, Intercooler coolant temperature higher than normal
Fix: The heat exchanger pump fails or the reservoir cracks, causing the intercooler system to lose effectiveness. Intake air temps climb and ECU pulls timing/boost. Pump and reservoir replacement together, 2-3 hours labor.
Estimated cost: $800-1,400
Head Gasket Failure (Overheated or Tuned Engines)
Occasional · high severity
Symptoms: Coolant loss with no visible leaks, White smoke from exhaust, Milky oil or chocolate milk appearance on dipstick, Overheating or rough idle
Fix: Head gaskets blow on engines that have been overheated or run aggressive tunes without upgraded head studs. Requires heads to be removed, checked for flatness, and MLS gaskets with ARP studs installed. 18-22 hours labor.
Estimated cost: $3,500-5,500
Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoids
Occasional · low severity
Typical onset: 90,000-130,000 mi
Symptoms: Check engine light with P0010, P0011, P0013, P0014 codes, Rough idle or stumble on cold start, Slight loss of low-end torque
Fix: The VVT solenoids on the cam phasers clog or fail electrically. Valve covers must come off to access. Replace all four solenoids and check screens for debris. 3-4 hours labor.
Estimated cost: $700-1,100
Fuel Pump Failure
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 80,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: Long crank time on startup, Stumble or hesitation under hard acceleration, Fuel pressure below spec (should be 58 psi), No-start condition
Fix: In-tank fuel pump wears out, especially in cars driven hard or run low on fuel frequently. Requires fuel tank drop. 2.5-3.5 hours labor.
Estimated cost: $600-1,000
Owner tips
Change transmission fluid every 30,000 miles with Dexron VI — this trans runs hot and fluid degrades fast
Install an aftermarket transmission cooler if you drive hard; the factory setup is marginal
Inspect differential fluid every 15,000 miles for metal content; catches bearing wear early
Use premium fuel only and keep the supercharger heat exchanger system maintained to prevent detonation damage
If modifying for power, upgrade head studs and consider forged pistons before going past 600 whp
Buy one if you can wrench or budget $2,000/year for maintenance — spectacular performance, but these need respect and preventive care to avoid catastrophic failures.

This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring.
General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 2, 2014 that they are recalling 554,328 model year 2003-2014 Cadillac CTS vehicles manufactured August 16, 2001, to April 28, 2014, and 2004-2006 Cadillac SRX vehicles manufactured March 20, 2003, to August 11, 2006. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 15, 2014. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is 14172.

GENERAL MOTORS IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009-2010 CADILLAC CTS VEHICLES. SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE A CONDITION IN WHICH A WAX COATING ON THE REAR SUSPENSION TOE LINK JAM NUTS MAY ALLOW THE NUT(S) TO LOOSEN. IF A NUT SUFFICIENTLY LOOSENS, THE TOE LINK COULD SEPARATE AND THE REAR WHEEL WOULD BE ABLE TO TURN INBOARD OR OUTBOARD. OWNERS MAY HEAR A METALLIC CLANKING NOISE COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE THAT MAY WARN OF A LOOSENING NUT.
Consequence: THE DRIVER MAY EXPERIENCE SUDDEN CHANGES WITH VEHICLE HANDLING AND MAY NOT BE ABLE TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL CLEAN ALL WAX RESIDUE FROM THE REAR SUSPENSION TOE LINK AND INSTALL TWO NEW JAM NUTS. IF NECESSARY THE REAR SUSPENSION TOE LINK MAY BE REPLACED. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR BEFORE MARCH 24, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CADILLAC AT 1-866-982-2339 AND AT THE OWNER CENTER AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.
